About OGTAP

Recruitment for this year's Oil and Gas Technical Apprenticeship Program (OGTAP) has launched on Sunday 1st  October as the innovative scheme for searches for its 2024 Nigerian cohorts. But many Nigerians still are not aware of this great opportunity.

The OGTAP scheme, managed by OPITO, the global safety and skills organization, and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), on behalf of industry operators and major contractors, was launched in 1999 to create a  sustainable pipeline of skilled and competent technicians.

Since then, more than 300,000 people globally have completed the four-year apprenticeship across four disciplines: instrument and control maintenance, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, and process operations. Apprentices gain recognized qualifications and practical training while working alongside OGTAP sponsoring companies.

There is always a huge demand for an OGTAP place which is not surprising given the many exciting and diverse opportunities this industry offers and OGTAP welcomes applications from anybody who meets the entry requirements with an interest in pursuing a career in this field.

With the world of energy ever-changing, OGTAP has been working assiduously to develop a skilled workforce to deliver a net zero future. Apprentices are set to play a huge role in the future energy workforce and the OGTAP program provides the fundamental qualifications needed for roles across the energy sector now and in the future."

What fields are available and which jobs do they lead to?

The Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme is offered in four key disciplines. The career options around each discipline are explained below:

3 - Process Operations

Production Technicians operate equipment and systems which process oil or gas. Technicians are responsible for maintaining safe operations and achieving production targets.

Oil and gas (and water) produced from underground or undersea reservoirs flow to the surface through well tubing and pipes. The flow is controlled by different types of valves and is routed to the surface facilities which process these well fluids.

The oil, gas and water are separated into three streams via vessels at different pressures and temperatures. The oil and gas is typically treated to remove any undesirable components of the fluids such as Hydrogen sulphide. The separated and treated fluids are then pumped or compressed so that it can be transported through long pipelines to refineries or further treatment plants – this part of the process is known as exporting.

The process operator or technician’s job is to ensure oil and gas keeps flowing to the required locations at the required specification.

Typical Day/Duties:

  • Starting up and shutting down process equipment such as pumps and compressors as required to keep the process flowing
  • Monitoring and recording the flow, temperatures and pressures of the oil, gas and water readings to ensure they stay within design parameters
  • Report and fix (where possible) problems with process or equipment
  • Prepare process equipment for either breakdown or routine maintenance by shutting down equipment and depressurising or draining the fluids contained in the process equipment, and closing in isolation valves
  • Bring equipment back into service following maintenance
  • Report any safety issues such as dangerous leaks or dangerous activities
  • Ensure that maintenance work teams have the appropriate permit-to-work (PTW) documents, and periodically monitor the maintenance activities to ensure they are working to safety instructions written on the PTW
  • Take instructions from the Control Room Operator or Shift Supervisor
  • They will also be trained to respond to different types of process emergencies.

How this role fits in with the rest of the industry:

FAQs

Will I be guaranteed employment at the end of my apprenticeship?

We can only guarantee a work placement, however 96% of apprentices go on to secure employment with their sponsoring company on successful completion of the programme.

I have qualifications not listed in the entry requirements, would I still be eligible to apply for the scheme?

The subjects you have studied have to be relevant to the apprenticeship scheme, so for example if you have Biology, this is not classed as a technical subject, however Physics and Chemistry are accepted at the required level.

I have Maths at the level required in your entry requirements, however the qualification was included in my HNC Mechanical Engineering, would this meet your criteria?
Although the level of Maths you are studying meets the criteria, it is a module that makes up part of your HNC qualification.  We only accept standalone qualifications in the required subjects, to find out more please refer to the entry criteria.

If I go on and study A-levels or Highers will I stand a better chance of securing a place on the apprenticeship?
As long as you meet the entry criteria listed you will be eligible to apply, however, A-Levels or Highers may benefit you at the interview stage of the recruitment process.

When do you make an offer of placement?
Conditional offers will be made in April/May subject to passing the Oil and Gas UK Medical.

Apprenticeship or University, I can't decide?
One isn’t better than the other, you just need to figure out which suits you.  Apprenticeships are a genuine alternative to university for those who want to earn while they learn and gain practical skills throughout the training.

Can I take a gap year?
The apprenticeship is a full time course for the specified duration, holidays are given but no additional time off is allowed as course work follows a strict timetable.

I am currently studying a degree in Mechanical Engineering at university but I am realizing I would prefer a more practical training course. Can I apply for the apprenticeship?

Yes, as long as you meet the required entry criteria you can apply.
